Formation of social identities

Culture is intertwined with the formation of social identities, after all it is through formal and informal education that one learns about the signs of cultural representations and identity formation. Thus, the school is one of the spaces in which culture is learned, in addition to having the power to value or stigmatize certain cultural backgrounds. Thus, the presence of black culture and identity in the school is fundamental to guarantee the feeling of representation / belonging to that space.

To discuss the real importance of black culture and identity at school is to rescue self-esteem and create new perspectives in the way citizens see themselves as equal to others. In this way, a school environment is created in which teachers act as constructive and empowering agents of ethnic issues, with regard to the rescue of history and its contribution to the formation of the country and the citizen.

School and identity

There are faces of Brazilian history that are not properly presented to the population, especially in textbooks and also in classrooms. The black population, which for centuries was subjugated by colonization, being enslaved and disqualified as an ethnic group, today is still excluded by standards demanded by society.

In the public and private school environment of elementary and high school, there is a lack of compatibility that often exists with the student, mainly of black ethnicity, the identification of their ancestors, signs and references. The part of black history that is told does not report its essence, but the colonizer 's view of events.

However, through the struggles of the black movement over time, there was an increase in the appreciation and recognition of the participation of African culture in the construction of society, a fact that can condition the expansion of students' horizons in terms of acceptance, recognition and learning.

Black culture and identity as taboo!

Black culture and identity at school has always been a taboo to be broken, something that for many years has been hidden society, especially in schools, whether in cultural expressions or in other ways. Currently, there is an increasing appreciation of black culture and a perception of the need to grant space to it in formal spaces of education.

According to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the percentage of self-declared blacks was 54.9%, among browns it increased 45.3% to 46.7% and blacks 7.4% to 8.2% , According to the person in charge of the research, Maria Lucia Vieira, this is related to the “recognition of the black population in relation to their own color, which makes more people identify themselves as black”.

Black culture and identity at school and its historical references

The devaluation in the history of black people in Brazil at school is constant - and their historical references, in most cases, are always subjugated or conformed to enslavement.

However, the existence of racism at school is already recognized by a large part of society, and the fight against institutional racism is one of the main banners of the black movement.

Even with the advent of Law 10.639, of January 9, 2003, which establishes the mandatory teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture, many schools have not yet managed to implement it, this situation can be read as a result of structural racism that still exists at school, or the lack of support and training of teachers to work with the themes required by the law presented.

The search to enter the reality of adolescents who live in conflicting dilemmas in their daily lives, because of the racial issue, is important because in many cases, they do not identify themselves as black, since the way beauty and black culture is still stereotyped and inferior to others.

Racist ideology is something that has been learned by society, hence the circumstance of not declaring itself, even in several cases. Black and black teenagers are still victims of racism, and this is due to the lack of explanation, understanding and understanding among teenagers about ethnic and cultural diversity, as this is the importance of approaching them while they are still in the formation and learning of society and their expressions.

The way in which the history of black people is portrayed in the school environment, how the body and aesthetics are treated and judged, can result in the valuation of difference, or the other way around. For this reason, the importance of black culture and identity in glue, in order to prepare young people for a more just and multicultural society.
