US blocks UN Security Council request for ceasefire in Gaza

Among the 15 members of the UN Security Council (United Nations), Washington was the only one to block the request for a ceasefire in Gaza, this Sunday (16), registered the Foreign Policy magazine.

All other countries followed the statement made by China, Norway and Tunisia to condemn both Israel and Hamas for continuing violence and to call for an end to the explosions that are already entering the second week.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said the country "works tirelessly" through diplomatic channels to contain hostilities. Still, several US Congressional senators are already calling for Washington to adhere to the ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Gaza is undergoing heavy bombing. A survey launched on Monday (17) by the Turkish agency Anadolu pointed to 200 deaths on the Palestinian side - among them, 59 children and 35 women, the Palestinian Authority said. There have been more than 1,300 injured since the 10th, the offensive began. In Israel, there are ten dead.

On Saturday (16), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the campaign in Gaza will continue "as long as necessary". Tel Aviv-based news website Walla, however, reported on Sunday that Egypt was mediating a ceasefire negotiation due to humanitarian deterioration in the region.

The 57 member states of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation have already called for Israel to cease its attacks in Gaza. Representatives Turkey and Iran also criticized the recent relations normalization agreements signed by Bahrain, Morocco, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates, under US mediation, last year.

"The massacre of Palestinian children today follows the supposed normalization," said Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. Israel's attacks on Gaza intensified on Monday (17).

Conflict deepens

Among the dead on Sunday were two Palestinian doctors. Ayman Abu al-Ouf, who coordinates the response to Covid-19 at Gaza's main hospital, and Moein Ahmad al-Aloul, one of the few neurologists in the territory. Together with Al-Aloul, his five children died.

On Monday, Tel Aviv said it had killed Palestinian military commander Hussam Abu Harbeed, Reuters confirmed. The Islamic leader was targeted in Israeli air strikes against the underground tunnels used by Hamas. Another three Palestinians died in the same attack.

Israel claims that Gaza militants fired about 60 rockets at Israeli cities during the night. Then, Israeli jets bombed 15 kilometers of tunnels and nine residences of senior Hamas commanders.

The war broke out last Monday, when Hamas fired rockets at Jerusalem after weeks of clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli police in the city claimed by Israelis and Palestinians.

It all started when Israel ordered heavy policing of the site during Ramadan and threatened the eviction of dozens of Palestinian families by Jewish settlers. The region has been bellicose for decades.
