Brazilian scientist receives same title given to Einstein, Darwin, Churchill and Mandela

Physics Angela Vilela studies astroparticles and is a professor at the University of Chicago

Brazilian researcher Angela Vilela Olinto became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Physics joins other scientists and personalities who also received the title, such as Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin. The honor is bestowed as a form of recognition for people who use science and other activities to face significant challenges.

In the same week, the scientist was also elected a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences. She was nominated by the institution, went through a long process of analysis that resulted in a final vote made by the academy at a meeting in April each year.

Currently, a maximum of 120 members can be elected annually. The organization is charged with advising the American government on matters related to science and technology.

Angela has a degree in physics the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ) and a doctorate in the field the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which is one of the most respected educational institutions in the world. With research focused on the study of astroparticles, the scientist has been a professor at the University of Chicago since 2006.

The researcher has a vast curriculum and even worked with NASA. Olinto is best known for her contributions to the study of the structure of neutron stars, primordial inflationary theory, cosmic magnetic fields, the nature of dark matter and the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays, gamma rays and neutrinos. She is the principal investigator for the space mission POEMMA (Probe Of Extreme Multi-Messenger Astrophysics) and EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory) on a superpressure balloon mission (SPB), and member of the Pierre Auger Observatory (a scientific collaboration center) among 19 countries), all designed to discover the origin of the highest energy cosmic particles, their sources and their interactions.
